December 28, 2011 – Tijuana, México
The San Diego Flash took on Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles de Caliente (the Xolos) U-20 side at Estadio Caliente. It was their second trip across the border in a year. In the previous meeting, the San Diego Flash won against the Xolos by a score of 3 – 1.

In this match, the Xolos were certainly looking for a bit of revenge for losing in the earlier match. This showed as the Xolos scored first in the 14th minute on a Bruno Piceno goal on receipt of a corner kick. The forward kicked from the outside of the box and put the ball in the upper left corner past Flash goal keeper Cristian Valdez.

For the balance of the 1st half, the San Diego Flash kept up the offensive pressure with many chances that could not find the back of the net.

2 minutes into extra time of the 1st half, Sergio Valle Ortiz sent a centering pass to the middle of the opponents box. Ladule LoSarah puts a shot in the back of the net to even the score for the visiting Flash; 1 – 1.

San Diego Flash vs Xolos de Tijuana

Going into the second half, most of the Xolos fans had come into the stadium to see the main event. A match between the Xolos 1st team and visiting club; Atlante from Cancún, México.

During the second half, the Flash players had the opportunity to play in front of a crowd estimated to be upwards of 11,000 people. The match ended with a 1 – 1 draw.

“It was a very good outcome for us,” said Flash Head Coach, Warren Barton. “We knew they wanted to beat us in front of their home crowd. We had several chances to pull ahead, but overall we are happy to get a draw on the road, in an opponents packed stadium.”

San Diego Flash is not only one of the top teams in the NPSL, it is also becoming a proving ground for talented players looking to move up. In their 1st year of play in the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL), three members of the Flash have had the opportunity to try out with Major League Soccer (MLS) teams, with one (Ryan Guy) being signed by the New England Revolution. Flash Head Coach Warren Barton was instrumental in connecting the three with the top-league teams.

In August, star forward Larry Emeanua traveled to New England for a tryout with head coach Steve Nicol, in part on the recommendation of Coach Barton. Despite going in with a lingering groin injury, Emeanua did very well. Afterwards Nicol told Barton that Larry is “a bit of a rough diamond, but there is definitely talent there.”

Flash goalkeeper Justin Myers also traveled back east to show off his skills to MLS teams. His first tryout was with D.C. United under Coach Ben Olsen. This was followed up by a training session in the Windy City with the Chicago Fire. Myers is also waiting to hear about a possible tryout with the Portland Timbers.

Coach Warren Barton spoke about the two players and their experiences. “I think what’s been really impressive is the feedback on both the boys,” he said. “I’ve spoken to both Steve Nicol and Ben Olsen and it was all positive. Larry and Justin went back there and each had a good week’s training. Both players have the opportunity to go back again later so they can have another assessment. Both coaches were very complimentary.”

“Larry went [to New England] and did very well,” Barton continued. That’s a great tribute to him. He’s got great natural ability and Nicol said he’d like to have another look. So that’s very promising.”

Speaking about the Flash’s goalie, Barton said, “Justin doesn’t surprise me. He’s been around professional MLS soccer before, and he’s played in Asia. He has a wealth of experience and, as I said, Benny [D.C. United Head Coach] was very complimentary about Justin. They have a situation now where they have a full allocation of goalkeepers, but there’s no doubt he’s on their radar.”

Earlier, in June, New England signed Flash midfielder Ryan Guy to a full MLS contract after giving him a try on Coach Barton’s recommendation. Guy, who grew up in San Diego and attended La Costa Canyon High School and the University of San Diego, had originally been drafted in 2007 by FC Dallas, but decided to follow his dreams to Europe. He eventually signed with St. Patrick’s Athletic in Dublin, Ireland and started for the team for four years before deciding to return to America this past January. Ryan worked out with the Flash for several weeks while waiting for his papers to transfer from Ireland before he was able to suit up.

After contributing on the pitch with the Flash, Guy had his chance with New England Revolution – an opportunity he made the most of. “Five weeks beforehand he was playing for us vs. Santa Ana Winds, and then five weeks later he’s playing for New England against Manchester United,” Barton pointed out. “So, it’s a great experience for him.” Recently Guy has had less playing time as Coach Nicol juggles the lineup and the system to improve the team’s record, but he continues to be optimistic. “Ryan is well thought of,” said Barton. “I spoke to Steve Nicol about Ryan and he said he’s a great kid with a great attitude. I told Ryan, ‘Keep your head up. Just think about where you were and where you are.’ In perspective, Ryan is playing Major League Soccer, and a year ago he wasn’t. It’s been frustrating for him to get more playing time, but he’s got enough ability and enough self-belief to do well.”

Ryan, Larry, and Justin are just three talented players on the Flash with potential. Coach Warren Barton has several others on his list of potential MLS candidates. One of the biggest differences between the two leagues, and it is a definite plus for Flash players, is the time NPSL coaches have to dedicate to player development. “MLS coaches haven’t got the time, really, to coach the players,” Barton explains. “They’re driven on results; they need to win games every week. What we’re able to do is give players a little bit more time, working with them to get them to understand how to become a professional soccer player.”

Clent Alexander, CEO of the Flash, says “Our goal is to have youth players in San Diego become Flash players and get opportunities to catch on with MLS teams, U.S. Soccer or even International Clubs. We have begun to set a foundation of being a top developmental club in the United States. Based on Coach Warren Barton’s dedication, skill as a coach, and vast connections, it’s likely that Larry, Justin and Ryan will not be the last Flash players to test their skills at the MLS level.”

The next tryouts for the Flash will take place in October.
The end to a magical first season in the NPSL came on a rapidly cooling Saturday night in San Diego as SD Flash took on the defending 2010 champion Sacramento Gold in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs. Experience met heart on the pitch, and this time experience came out on top. In a hard-fought game that saw constant back-and-forth movement, the visitors managed to hand the Flash their first and only home loss of the season in front of a crowd of devoted fans.

SD Flash came out strong on the attack to begin the game, but Sacramento Gold refused to give way and soon turned the flow in their favor. Momentum swung from one side to the other until the 35th minute when Sacramento’s Oscar Sandoval fired a rocket into the corner beyond the reach of Flash goalie Justin Meyers. San Diego immediately went on the attack and scored the equalizer in the 42nd minute when team captain Nelson Pizarro took a feed on the right and beat the goalie. SD Flash continued to press, but the half ended in a 1-1 tie.

In the second half SD Flash started strong, but seemed to go flat after several close misses. Sacramento had several near misses as well as they kept up a strong press against the Flash defense. Several Sacramento attacks were blunted by offside calls, but more than once Justin Meyers was called on to punch a shot out as the visitors pushed for the lead. As the game progressed, tempers flared and several yellow cards where shown for violations on both sides. Finally, in the 76th minute, Sacramento’s Fernando Cabadas beat the defense and put a shot past Meyers for the lead and the final 2-1 score. SD Flash increased their attacks, but Sacramento Gold dropped back into a defensive shell, denying multiple attempts to even the score. “We went down a goal in the beginning which hurt us,” said Justin Meyers after the game. “Coming back from behind is difficult. Sacramento Gold did a good job and put the game away.” Head Coach Warren Barton agreed with Meyers’ observation, saying “We felt like we were good enough to win it, but great credit to Sacramento. They are defending champions and they knew how to win this game.”

After the game, Flash players and coaches reflected on the team’s first season in the NPSL, which saw the team go 12-1-1 on the field during the regular season and finish in first place in the Southwest Division of the Western Conference. “The whole season overall was a learning experience,” said Assistant Coach Jerome Watson. “We have things to improve, but for the first year I thought we did very well.” Looking ahead to next year, Goal Keeper and ironman Justin Meyers talked about getting more players out and exposed to the level of play. Ladule LoSarah spoke for many on the team saying, “It was a lot of fun; we put a lot of effort into it from the beginning to the end. I almost can’t believe that it’s over.” Although disappointed in the results, Coach Warren Barton expressed his appreciation for both the players and the front office. “I couldn’t wish to have nicer people around,” he commented. “The players have been a credit. They’ve brought a lot of happiness and we’ve had a lot of fun.”

SD Flash CEO Clent Alexander was understandably disappointed in the results of the game, but upbeat about the team and its future. Discussing SD Flash’s decision to join the NPSL, Alexander said, “We’re very happy with the National Premiere Soccer League. We think it was the best place for us to play this year and in the future. In my opinion they’re the most solid league in the United States underneath Major League Soccer.” He went on to discuss the team’s season and its ups and downs. “It’s been a great ride. We started strong. We had some difficulties with the ineligible player, but that was just growing pains for us, learning how to deal with different administrative issues. At the end of the day our guys played well on the field and I’m very proud of what they accomplished.”

SD Flash has plans to remain involved in the local soccer community over the off season. Currently the team is working on possible “friendly” matches with other teams in both the San Diego and Tijuana regions.

By Stephen Prendergast

Sunday - July 3, 2011 – Less than twenty-four hours after knocking off the Rattlers FC in a close 2-1 game to clinch first place in the NPSL Southwestern Division, the SD Flash routed Hollywood United 5-1 to close out a phenomenal first season. The SD Flash had beaten Hollywood 3-1 earlier in the season, only to see the game reversed because of an ineligible player. This time there was no question about the roster or the outcome.

Proving there is no love lost between these teams, less than three minutes into the contest the Flash’s Larry Emeanua was involved in an on-field altercation with a Hollywood player. At first it appeared that it might be a double-yellow card situation, but instead the referee showed the red card to the visiting player for hitting Emeanua in the face. Hollywood protested the call, but the officials were firm and the visitors were forced to play a man down for the balance of the game. Discussing the call afterwards, SD Flash head coach Warren Barton commented, “You can’t go around punching people in the head, that’s the rules. They tried to do it twice. They’re going to deny it. I wasn’t worried whether there were ten men or eleven men. We beat them last time, we beat them this time. We do our talking on the field.”

In spite of losing a man, Hollywood United played hard and kept the game close for the first half. For twenty minutes it was attack and counter-attack until SD Flash forward Larry Emeanua collected a long outlet on a counter-attack, beat one defender, and fired a shot past the diving goalie into the net. Hollywood immediately drove for the equalizer, but strong defense denied them the score and the Flash took the ball back into the visitor’s territory. Then at the 28-minute mark Ralph Pace took a Miguel Gomez corner kick and shot a header at the goal. The shot bounced off the turf and hit the crossbar, ricocheted back down with a wicked topspin, and squirted past the surprised goalie into the net for a 2-0 Flash lead. The final minutes of the half saw several clashes between players, including a yellow card offense against Hollywood for charging Flash goalie Justin Myers in the box.

Between halves SD Flash awarded tickets to the upcoming Real Madrid v Chivas de Guadalajara game that will be played at Qualcomm Stadium. SD Flash and the San Diego Sports Commission have partnered with the World Football Challenge to help promote the game. Two winners were chosen for a pair of tickets, and two young fans won the chance to be on the field during the game as ball boys and four tickets for their families to come watch. The Flash also gave away pairs of tickets in an online contest through their Facebook page.

In the second half, Hollywood United came out looking to score early and often. They managed the “early,” netting a shot in the second minute of the period. However the “often” would be left for SD Flash. Taking advantage of his strong bench, head coach Barton began substituting new legs for tired, with good results. In the 52nd minute of the game, newly subbed-in Nick Perera struck for SD Flash, taking a feed from Nelson Pizarro and beating the Hollywood goalie. The visitors worked hard to keep the home team out, denying several more Flash attacks, but could not stop every attempt. In the 76th minute Sergio Valle-Ortiz ran in on the ball as the Hollywood goalie was coming out to clear it and fired a shot into the net to bring the score to 4-1. The Flash struck one last time, in the first minute of stoppage time, when Nick Perera took a feed in front of the net and easily beat the keeper once again for the final 5-1 score.

The game had more than its share of hard shots, with several yellow cards on both sides. “It was a physical game, there’s no doubt,” said coach Barton. “Their intention was to try and be physical with us and we kept our discipline (and) our professionalism.” The tactic seemed to work against Hollywood more than for them, although late in the second half Barton decided to pull team captain Nelson Pizarro, who had received several warnings about retaliating. “I didn’t want to lose him,” Barton explained. “I can’t afford to lose players like Nelson, he’s a top-class player in this division.” With the strong Flash bench, Barton was able to replace Pizarro and not lose overall quality on the field.

Afterwards, several members of the team and staff talked about the game. “It was just fun, you know,” said Nick Perera. “It was an open game because they got a red card so early on. There were a lot of gaps for us to exploit and we were moving the ball around pretty well, I thought.” SD Flash goalie Justin Myers credited the team with playing well the day after a tough road win. “The defense played very well, midfield played well with playmaking and our forwards finished the ball, which was the key to the game.” CEO Clent Alexander attempted to put his feelings into words. “This year has been magical. All these players came out of the woodwork from the San Diego soccer community,” Alexander said. “We all worked very hard, and for us to do this in our very first year (first place in the division), we’re all extremely proud of the guys and their performance on the field.”

Next up, the SD Flash host their very 1st playoff match against the 2010 defending Champion Sacramento Gold at 7pm, July 9th at Westview HS in San Diego, Ca.

Sunday was the big rematch to see who would be in control of the Southwest Division. The SD Flash (8 – 3 – 0) and Santa Ana Winds FC (7 – 4 – 0) are the two top teams in the Division. These two clubs squared off against each other for the second time in 3 weeks.

In the previous meeting, the SD Flash was able to dominate the play and came away with a 4 – 0 victory. In Sunday’s match; although the 2 – 0 score was different, the play was about the same.

In the opening half, the SD Flash played aggressively, keeping the ball in the Winds terrirory. At the 7 minute mark, #16 Brennan Tennelle delivered a beautiful cross that found the foot of #10 Larry Emeanua; who calmly chipped the ball into the net for the 1st goal of the game.

Just a couple minutes later, at the 9 minute mark, Emeanua was able to get a breakaway down the side and beat the Winds goalie for a 2 – 0 lead for the Flash. That was the score at the end of the half.

SD Flash 2 – Santa Ana Winds FC 0.

In the begining of the 2nd half, the SD Flash seemed as though they were going to keep up the scoring pressure. Two point black opportunities were missed in the first 10 minutes that would have certainly put the match away. However there seemed to be too much dribbling in front of the net.

These missed opportunities gave the Winds confidence. They began to mount some offesnsive pressure of their own. Time after time, Flash goal keeper, #1 Justin Myers made save after save. One key save came on a set piece from just outside the box. Myers got a hand on the ball and deflected it away to preserve the shut out. Myers has 5 shut outs this season in goal for the Flash.

Final Score: SD Flash 2 – Santa Ana Winds FC 0

Warren Barton; Head Coach of the SD Flash said, “The guys played well enough to win today. We missed a number of opportunities that I believe should have been converted. I’ve made it clear to the players that as we move forward, we need to be more focused and put away the chances that we get.”

In the rematch of the “San Diego Derby”, the entire San Diego Soccer Community got to see a good show!

SD Flash started the game strong, pressing deep into Boca territory several times and carrying much of the flow of the game. However, in the 10th minute San Diego Boca FC forward Cameron Roget took a outlet pass deep in Flash territory, fought off the lone defender, and fired a shot off to the left of goal keeper Justin Myers. Myers dove for the ball but the shot was just out of reach, hitting the back of the net for a 1-0 Boca lead.

The goal seemed to energize the home team and they began to take control of the game. San Diego Boca’s aggressive marking and physical play appeared to throw SD Flash off their normal game. The remainder of the first half was back-and-forth, with Boca dictating much of the flow.

In the second half SD Flash came out strong and attempted to establish their game, but San Diego Boca continued to challenge. Although the visitors were taller, the home team refused to let them use their height advantage, continuing to mark tightly and play aggressively.

In the 60th minute of play San Diego Boca struck again, with Cameron Roget scoring his second goal of the night. After this SD Flash redoubled their efforts, forcing Steve Gonzalez to make several acrobatic saves. Finally, at the 74th minute, Larry Emeanua collected the ball in front of the Boca net and fired a shot to the far side, just out of Gonzalez’s reach, to cut the lead to 2-1. As time clicked down it appeared that the game would end on that score, but SD Flash refused to go quietly.

Because of several injuries and the altercation, five minutes were added on as stoppage time. Three minutes into stoppage time, Larry Emeanua executed an amazing bicycle kick on a rebound from a blocked shot, beating Gonzalez and evening the score at 2-2. SD Flash erupted in celebration, but it was too soon. Seconds later Juan “Kichis” Perez-Bernal took a pass in front of the Flash goal and flicked a desperation shot. The ball bounced off a defender’s face and slipped past goalie Justin Myers for the winning score.
Final: SD Flash 2 – San Diego Boca FC 3

Head Coach Warren Barton said “Congratulations to San Diego Boca for the win. Despite the loss, tonight was a great night for soccer in San Diego. We appreciate the fans who came out to cheer for both teams.”

“For us it was one game. Our guys will regroup from this match and we will push on to our bigger goal of bringing a Championship to San Diego.”

The Flash’s next home match is this Sunday (June 19th – 3pm) where they face the Santa Ana Winds FC in a rematch from the previous weekend that saw the host Winds go down in a 4-0 Flash win. This game is expected to decide who will finish in first place in the division!

The SD Flash Soccer Club of San Diego Announces Exclusive Partnership with Soccer Fanatic Soccer Stores

In the agreement, Soccer Fanatic will become the exclusive uniform, equipment and fan gear supplier for the SD Flash as they embark on their inaugural season as a Professional Soccer Club in the National Premier Soccer League. In addition, also on an exclusive basis, Soccer Fanatic will market SD Flash Soccer Club merchandise at each of their retail locations, at their website (www.SoccerFanatic.com) with an online team room and with a professional kiosk for vending at SD Flash home games.

The Soccer Fanatic Soccer Store has been in business for over 14 years in Southern California. They have an extensive reach in the San Diego Soccer Community. Approximately 90% of all Youth Soccer Clubs in San Diego County get their team apparel from Soccer Fanatic. This would include over 45 Youth Clubs and thousands of Youth Players per year. Through the years, they have accumulated upwards of 300K Soccer Specific customers from San Diego, in their database.

The Partnership also means that Soccer Fanatic will market the SD Flash, exclusively, to their database. They will feature the SD Flash on the Home Page of their website, mention the SD Flash in all messaging and newsletters to it’s thousands of Soccer Fanatic database and help create dynamic marketing campaigns using SD Flash merchandise to boost ticket sales.

“I believe this is the best soccer-specific strategic partnership available in all of San Diego County. It will certainly help the SD Flash Organization in the areas of exposure to soccer fans for awareness, marketing and financial growth.” Says Clent Alexander, CEO of the SD Flash Soccer Club. ”We continue to seek out relationships with other businesses that support Soccer in San Diego. The combined databases and audiences of Soccer Fanatic and the SD Flash Soccer Club can create many win-win situations in the future.”

The SD Flash has elected to have Soccer Fanatic on the front of Team Jerseys for the 2011 season; with a year by year option for the future.
